Why are languages so important in our Education? Why is the world in an increasing demand for multilingual people?
Some years ago speaking more than one language was a plus, a prestige. Today, it continues to be a prestige; however, it is no longer a plus. Yes, languages today are a must, especially when it comes to English. It is thought that someday Chinese will be a must as well. The mere thought of this could give us a headache; you may think “my kids will necessarily HAVE to learn Chinese?” The truth is we can’t be really sure. However, it is very possible that if they do, they will have as many opportunities as English speakers have today. In other words, the easiness we have today mitigates the high demands for knowledge. That is why the idea of our kids or grandkids ‘having’ to learn more complex languages (as regards a complete different writing system) doesn’t scare us at all.
